Sharma, Anita. Application for Ph.D. Study in Westfield State University March 2026 Page 1

My Statement of Purpose

I intend to apply for the Ph.D. Programme in Educational Psychology in the College of Education, Westfield State University for the fall of 2026.

Motivation and Purpose

My motivation for further study and research in Educational Psychology is closely connected to my experience as a language educator and to my ongoing interest in second language acquisition. I hold an MA in Linguistics from Riverview National University, obtained in 2010. Upon graduation, I joined the Department of Foreign Languages at the same institution as a faculty member. I have maintained a deep interest in language acquisition, particularly in bilingual education and literacy development. In 2015 I became a mother, which gave me fresh impetus to explore how children acquire language naturally and how schooling systems can better support that process.

A series of questions drives my proposed research: why do students in many countries invest years in learning a foreign language at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels yet emerge with limited communicative competence? How can cognitive science and educational psychology inform more effective pedagogical practices? I have read your programme description with great interest and believe the Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at Westfield State University is precisely the environment I need to deepen my knowledge and refine my methodology.

Academic Background

Undergraduate study I majored in English Education at the Foreign Languages Department of Lakeside Normal University. I received a thorough grounding in general education, introductory educational psychology, pedagogy, and foreign literature. I excelled in both academic coursework and extracurricular activities, ranking among the top five in a class of 25. I served as assistant editor-in-chief of the university's literary journal as a junior and assumed the editor-in-chief role in my senior year.

Graduate Study After two years of secondary-school teaching, I passed the National Postgraduate Entrance Examination and pursued my MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Riverview National University. The programme is nationally recognised for its strong focus on applied research. My coursework spanned theoretical linguistics, second language acquisition, and language testing. I ranked in the top five of a class of fifteen and benefited greatly from faculty guidance, though limited laboratory resources and library holdings posed challenges to systematic empirical research.

Research activities After graduation, I conducted research in several fields and published two scholarly books, three peer-reviewed papers, and several translation works. Notable contributions include: a paper on discourse analysis that received the first prize at the National Translators Association Conference in 2012; a monograph on contemporary English idioms that was awarded the title of Outstanding Academic Publication by the University Press in 2015; and participation as a field reporter in a nationwide survey of college English education carried out between 2016 and 2019.

Work Experience

Since completing my MA in 2010, I have been a faculty member in the Department of Foreign Languages at Riverview National University, teaching both English-major and non-English-major students. Key achievements include: leading the College English Teaching and Research Group from 2017, coordinating curriculum design, assessment policy, and TESL research initiatives; receiving the Excellent Young Teacher award in 2015 and 2019; and being promoted to Associate Professor in 2016, becoming the youngest person to hold that rank in the department.

Plan for Professional Study and My Future Career

I plan to pursue my doctoral study at Westfield State University, majoring in Educational Psychology and minoring in Second Language Acquisition. After graduation, my ambition is to return to my home institution and apply the depth of knowledge and methodological rigour I have acquired to become a language educator and reformer with a particular focus on TESOL. I am committed to developing more efficient and evidence-based approaches to foreign language teaching and learning that will serve students and educators in my country.
