Statement of Purpose for Child

As a child born and raised in Chennai, India, I grew up surrounded by questions about living systems — why leaves turn yellow, how wounds heal, why some families seem to carry the same illnesses across generations. These questions deepened when I took biology in high school and first encountered the concept of gene regulation. I became fascinated by the idea that incredibly complex traits could be altered by the switching on or off of a single gene. My desire to understand these molecular switches — and to explore how disruptions in them lead to disease — is what first drew me to cell biology and is now driving me to pursue doctoral research.

At Westbrook University (WBU) I have engaged in rigorous coursework in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and statistics. As a freshman, I enrolled in a Molecular Mechanisms of Development honours research tutorial that examined how signalling pathways coordinate tissue formation during embryogenesis. I assisted a doctoral student with data collection and imaging, and eventually contributed independently to designing experimental controls. This early experience reinforced my commitment to the discipline and gave me a working familiarity with laboratory protocols, microscopy techniques, and scientific communication.

In my junior year, I joined Dr. Sunita Mehta's lab, where the focus is on studying cell division and early developmental processes in Caenorhabditis elegans. We characterised cell division mutants using molecular and genetic analyses to investigate parental contributions to developmental phenotypes. Since cell division mechanisms are highly conserved across eukaryotes, understanding them in this model organism provides insight applicable to human development and disease. Working in this lab, I developed proficiency in fluorescence microscopy, genetic crossing, RNAi knockdown, and molecular cloning — skills I have since applied in independent follow-up experiments.

For the past two summers I have contributed to a research project in Dr. Arjun Bose's lab examining the relationship between phosphate availability and lateral root architecture in Arabidopsis thaliana. We quantitatively studied the effects of low phosphate concentrations on root gravitropism in wild-type and mutant seedlings. I employed techniques including PCR, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, automated image analysis, and confocal time-lapse photography. At the end of my second summer, I presented a poster at the departmental symposium and co-authored a section of a manuscript currently under review. These experiences confirmed my passion for investigative research and refined my experimental design skills.

My education and research experience at WBU have prepared me for a graduate programme in Molecular and Cell Biology. I am particularly excited about the faculty at Lakeland Graduate University. Dr. Helena Cross's work on GTPase signalling in epithelial cell migration and metastasis is directly relevant to the questions I wish to pursue, and her lab employs Western blotting, transduction, and live-cell imaging — techniques I am already comfortable working with. I am also drawn to the programme's interdisciplinary structure, which allows doctoral students to rotate across laboratories in their first year, broadening their methodological repertoire before committing to a thesis project.

My career goal is to become an independent investigator in the field of translational cancer biology, with a focus on identifying novel therapeutic targets by examining cell signalling dysfunctions in tumour development. In addition to conducting research, I am committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and fostering an inclusive, collaborative laboratory culture. I believe that the rigorous training, diverse intellectual community, and research resources available through the doctoral programme at Lakeland Graduate University will provide exactly the foundation I need to achieve these ambitions.
